{Spring/Summer Fashion Trends For Engagement Photos}
I have a confession to make. My all-time guilty pleasure is fashion bloggers on Instagram. I follow several of them and I LOVE seeing the latest trends and finding new ways to style my wardrobe. I actually try to find ways to NOT wear the same exact outfit twice. Nerdy, I know….but it’s fun to me! And embarrassingly enough, people have noticed. Haha! Of course, naturally as a photographer, the number one question I get asked for engagement photography session prep is, “What should I wear?” This is always such an important question because I want you to feel comfortable and look your absolute best in your images. But, most of the time, people don’t always know what photographs best with digital photography and our body types. That’s why I have complied my best tips plus my love for fashion in one post to inspire your engagement session attire for this spring and summer!
Here are a few key points to keep in mind when searching for those perfect outfits!
- Neutrals such as blush, tans, link pinks, faint blues and teals, creams, grays and whites will always result in more of a light and airy look to your images. The style I love most! These colors photograph softer and more romantically!
- If you’re really looking for a soft, feminine look, I recommend a flowing, maxi-length dress or skirt! The movement of this type of fabric photographs beautifully! Plus looks great on many body types!
- I recommend a more formal outfit and a more casual one, so that you have plenty of variety to choose from later!
- The goal is COORDINATING outfits instead of MATCHING! I also recommend avoiding both of you wearing WHITE as a top. White doesn’t allow for any contrast in your images.
- Guys, I recommend that you avoid patterns that are smaller than a dime! These small patterns can create strange visual effects in a digital camera. Close-toed shoes photograph well, and I recommend avoiding
graphic tees and tennis shoes! - Gals, I recommend that you wear something that flatters the parts of you that you love the most and also allows you to be extremely confident! If you are uncomfortable when you look in the mirror (having to suck
in and only like the way you look from one angle), then that probably isn’t the best outfit choice for you. I want you to be really confident in your outfit, because I know that you will love your portraits so much
more if you’re not worrying about how your clothes fit!
Where does my inspiration come from? Pantone is the #1 standard for color trends in fashion and design and this year’s Color of the Year is Classic Blue. Last year’s was Living Coral. I based these outfit ideas for you AND your fiance based on these colors AND carefully designed color palettes all found on Pantone’s website that include several complimentary and neutral colors. These colors are so popular right now and are really flattering on most skin types.
And now for the best part…the outfits!!
Going for solid colors with textured fabrics can add tons of interest to your images!!
One of the biggest trends right now is wearing sneakers with casual dresses or skirts and I am totally here for it! I love feeling put together all while being comfortable!
If you’re not a dress person then I recommend a duster cardigan! You can still get the same flowy movement and still wear jeans!
Flowing blouses are all the rage and are very flattering on all body types!
“Statement” sleeves are also really popular and have some major slimming effects!
Add accessories like a hat for some fun variety!
The biggest thing to remember is to stay true to who you are and what you feel most comfortable in. Wearing what you love will help you feel confident and relaxed and, in turn, you will enjoy your images so much more!
